Hey. It’s Friday!
This week I read:
Measure Of My Days
By: Florida Scott-Maxwell
Penguin Books; First edition (April 26, 1979)
150 pages
This book is about growing old. It is about being old, actually – and the feelings that dominate so many as they sense their life slowing down and coming to a close. Thank goodness for the courage of psychologist Florida Scott-Maxwell to pour her feelings out into a notebook to give us a glimpse of her mind at this stage. You may see flashes of your grandparents or great-grandparents as you read this book, I know I did.
Two of my favorite quotes:
“Age puzzles me. I thought it was a quiet time. My seventies were interesting, and fairly serene, but my eighties are passionate. I grow more intense as I age. To my own surprise I burst out with hot conviction.”
“I dwell with the essence of friends so intensely that when they arrive I can be paralysed by the astonishing opacity of their actual presence.”
