Pretend It’s A City, With Fran Lebowitz

Pretend It’s A City, With Fran Lebowitz

Pretend It’s A City is a Netflix limited series that I just found a delight.

Of course, as soon as I heard Lebowitz say that she wished she could be paid to lay on the couch and read all day – I knew we were kindred spirits.

More of that.

Less of what – uh – everyone else is doing.

Movies About Hollywood Never Make Money?

Movies About Hollywood Never Make Money?

Do movies about Hollywood never make money?

Seems like it could be anecdotally true…

It does resonate that most industries are not good at introspection.

I mean, who wants to celebrate how their own sausage is made in the form of a parody?

This is probably why, for example, this book was not popular in and around Washington D.C.

Of course the first “Hollywood film” I thought of off the top of my head was Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, By: Quentin Tarantino.

Budget: ~$90-96 million
Box Office: ~$374 million

Maybe times have changed.

What we didn’t do, along the way, was get Somebody’s Darling filmed. The story, like Loop Group, had the misfortune of being about Hollywood, and it’s a Hollywood truism that movies about Hollywood never make money. Probably Hollywood exists to create illusions, not dispel them, which even a low-wattage story such as Somebody’s Darling might tend to do. The dream factory just can’t afford to dream about itself.

-Larry McMurtry, Hollywood (Amazon)
