The Chicago Bears 46 defense is something that all football players should know about.
In fact, when facing a less than talented quarterback – think high school football and below – the more using the 46 defense can work.
High school football coaches, take note.
The 46 has the potential to stop a quarterback intent on throwing the ball on you.
It uses 6 men at the line, two linebackers on the strong side, and three defensive backs.
Developed by football legend Buddy Ryan, the game transforming 46 defense made the Chicago Bears unstoppable for a time.
The 46 made its debut six days after that terrible loss to Detroit. Ryan felt a special urgency: the Bears were facing the best offense in the NFL. I recommend this game, played Sunday, October 25, 1981, for study by future generations.
