Want To Write? Make Inspiration A Constant.

Want To Write? Make Inspiration A Constant.

Ok, maybe this was a bad headline – admittedly, it’s hard to “make inspiration.”

Why? Because it’s not really creative revelation we are talking about.

It’s discipline.

This reminds me of all the wisdom found in the book Bird by Bird.

And the themes of persistence and grit nearly need to become their own categories on this website at this point.

I’ll even say it like this if I can be so bold:

ART = Discipline

But if you don’t know how to start writing, you can always copy someone who has gone before you.

Why not just start at 9:00?

Someone once asked Somerset Maugham if he wrote on a schedule or only when struck by inspiration. “I write only when inspiration strikes,” he replied. “Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o’clock sharp.”

–Steven Pressfield, The War Of Art
