Democracies Want What Exactly?

Democracies Want What Exactly?

What behavior do democracies want?

Behavior that fills the democratic role?

Or behavior from a foundation that keeps the mob at bay?

Good grief what if everyone figures out they can vote themselves money?

Or has it already come to that?

Nor, of course, must they ever be allowed to raise Aristotle’s question: whether ‘democratic behaviour’ means the behaviour that democracies like or the behaviour that will preserve a democracy. For if they did, it could hardly fail to occur to them that these need not be the same.
–C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters
