I like this idea that the best version of your art is not for everybody, that great art divides us.
This seems to parallel the belief I have heard about writing for everyone – writing that no one wants to read.
As opposed to writing for an audience of one – writing that has a voice and perspective.
(I frequently write to my wife.)
If you are bland and boring, taking a stand might be exactly what you need.
Try it?
You just never know.
People want things that are really passionate. Often the best version is not for everybody. The best art divides the audience. If you put out a record and half the people who hear it absolutely love it and half the people who hear it absolutely hate it, you’ve done well. Because it is pushing that boundary.”
