Unpredictable Rewards Keep People Coming Back

[This is part of the series: 31 Persuasion Tips That I Learned From Scott Adams]

Unpredictable rewards can get you more attention.

This tactic is straightforward.

Because how easy is it to get complacent and unexcited about your paycheck?

You do X, you get Y.

That’s great, but that’s boring.

Slots are more addictive though, right?

You pull that lever – and you have no idea what you are going to get.

But how can this apply to you?

Staying unpredictable courts attention.

Part of this is because unpredictability makes people stop and think.

PERSUASION TIP 15: Studies say humans more easily get addicted to unpredictable rewards than they do predictable rewards.
-Scott Adams, Win Bigly
