The “So What Test” is supposed to filter out your “bad” or “par” artwork before you ship it.
I agree with the sentiment of that – I mean – about wanting to produce your best work.
But work that is “bad” and work that is “par” is largely subjective.
I have published things that I thought were great – and guess what?
Nobody cared.
The opposite has also happened.
One of my most popular posts was nothing but a picture.
I say that if you are in doubt – hit the Publish button.
But obviously, you shouldn’t be making stuff you wouldn’t show your boss – or your mom.
Always be sure to run everything you share with others through The “So What?” Test. Don’t overthink it; just go with your gut. If you’re unsure about whether to share something, let it sit for 24 hours. Put it in a drawer and walk out the door. The next day, take it out and look at it with fresh eyes. Ask yourself, “Is this helpful? Is it entertaining? Is it something I’d be comfortable with my boss or my mother seeing?”
