How long are
you willing to do the work, for little to no payout?
Two years? Three years? Seven years?
I hope the answer is that you would do it for free if you had to.
Understand: This is about answering the question: What kind of person do I want to be?
The truth is that nearly everything takes longer than you want it to.
Again – persistence wins.
I often, at my lectures, remind would-be writers that many of the novelists and short story writers, that most of the writers they now admire most had to write two or three unpublished efforts before they finally broke through. A look back at literary history suggests that this has long been the case.
