Didn’t Need Exercise

Do you know any of these people that didn’t need exercise either?

Boy my grandfather was one.

He played football in high school like everyone else but would have thought jogging or lifting weights a silly waste of time as an adult.

And rightly so.

“Working out” would never occur to those spending their days outside doing physical work.

It wasn’t until the population began moving away from farming and ranching in large numbers that this issue arose for the first time.

We began watching TV and sitting in cubicles all of our waking hours – and it shows.

Life expectancy is up overall though, so it’s a mixed bag.

People who were working-class—who didn’t need exercise machines or personal trainers because they worked all day and were not the least interested in working on weird machines throughout the evening—suddenly began to get tennis lessons at a facility in Wichita Falls. Some of them, God help us, even began to jog. My father had just passed away but if he had been alive he would probably have died laughing at this spectacle.

-Larry McMurtry, Hollywood (Amazon)
