Why Do You Write?

Why Do You Write?
Well.

Why do you write?

Maybe for some, it is a creative outlet.

A way to journal, or organize their thoughts.

I find that I never really know what I think about something until I research it and write 500 – 1,500 words on it.

Maybe it is even a natural progression after a certain amount of reading.

I don’t know.

Possibly it is one of the few things some are capable of.

“Interviewers ask famous writers why they write, and it was (if I remember correctly) the poet John Ashbery who answered, “Because I want to.” Flannery O’Connor answered, “Because I’m good at it,” and when the occasional interviewer asks me, I quote them both. Then I add that other than writing, I am completely unemployable.”

-Anne Lamott, Bird By Bird (Amazon)
