You go sit by a pond now and then when you can because it’s what idlers do.
It’s what you do when you need a minute.
There is the cool of the morning and the sound of the water. If you are in a boat you will hear the sound of the rigging. The echo of the wind in the trees eases your mind. Damp air fills your lungs. You find respite in the ripples that the water makes when something falls in.
As the sun moves higher and the day begins to warm, you might open a cold drink in a shady place and take a moment to reflect.
You are glad you are not at work.
My memories are thick with such things.
I remember my ear pressed to the bottom of our boat and the sound of the water beneath it. We drank Dr. Pepper when it got hot and looked for alligators in the dark water. My father was young. And the years were wide open in front of us.
Understand: Fishing and sitting by ponds is an excuse to be idle.
