A Very Cold Universe

Agreed, if we are simply “a puff of warm breath in a very cold universe,” there are not many alternatives to which we can turn.

Insignificant physics is one option. but the other is something much more profound and eternal.

To be God—to be like God and to share His goodness in creaturely response—to be miserable—these are the only three alternatives. If we will not learn to eat the only food that the universe grows—the only food that any possible universe ever can grow—then we must starve eternally.

If God Is Love

If God is love (instead of irrelevant), it raises more questions than it answers, I think.

But saying we are “immeasurably insignificant” doesn’t feel right somehow.

The alternative to this is even more significant.

For if we are “incalculable precious and interesting” we have suddenly flung open the doors of patience and kindness and gentleness and grace.

Suddenly love is possible.

And suddenly everything is possible.

If God is Love, He is, by definition, something more than mere kindness. And it appears, from all the records, that though He has often rebuked us and condemned us, He has never regarded us with contempt. He has paid us the intolerable compliment of loving us, in the deepest, most tragic, most inexorable sense.
