[This is part of the series: 20 Writing Tips From John Erickson]
Good writing is clear.
Got it? Got it.
You know, I struggle with clarity myself when writing (we all do).
But I often find it helpful to stop and ask a simple question when trying to provide clarity to others
.
I’ll read a vague half a page, point to it, and ask: “What are you trying to say here?”
When they answer back in three clear sentences, I say: “Perfect! Now write exactly that – as you have just said it.”
Don’t forget – or ever discount this need.
Superior writing needs simplicity.
4. Good writing is clear, not obscure.
